Submission
for HRC Investigation into Racism and the Media

This submission comes
in two parts. The first is an academic critique of the research commissioned
by the HRC, and it concludes that the Braude and MMP findings cannot be relied
upon. But in order to go further than just critique, I have also contributed
a second component. This is not alternative research - I do not have the resources,
time nor all the expertise to undertake this. Rather, it is an analysis that
highlights how Black Consciousness can contribute a strategic perspective
to the whole question of identifying and countering racist media coverage.
In many ways, this second aspect avoids the finger-pointing and fruitless
controversies around research, and suggests instead a general action plan
in its place.
